A new opportunity to strengthen the aquaculture export logistics chain in the southernmost regions of Chile opened with the milestone of the first shipment of salmon containers to foreign countries at PUERTO CHINCUI by OXXEAN companies in Puerto Montt on Sunday, January 24.
Export containers of salmon were loaded onto the Transmares motor vessel Cóndor to be connected to their final destination by Maersk, the world’s largest shipping line for this type of cargo. The operation began on Wednesday the 20th with the arrival of the containers at PUERTO CHINCUI, establishing a new way of transporting and exporting in the southern aquaculture industry, with advantages that open up a beneficial scenario for this activity, for companies in the sector, and for those in the region, with Puerto Montt as a gateway for sea exports.
This shipping option in the regional capital of Los Lagos offers concrete advantages for the aquaculture industry. For example, it reduces the risk of land losses caused by transporting their products by road to ports authorized to receive their shipments. The closest port with these characteristics is in Concepción Bay.
Exporters in the area now also have a port to ship their cargo abroad, with nearby logistics that consolidates their sea shipments in the southern region itself, without having to wait for the freight to be loaded for the sale to be finalized.
Nicolás Mendoza, manager of PUERTO CHINCUI, described the operation as smooth, safe, and seamless, adding that if we work together, this milestone could be the beginning of something that will benefit the entire region. «As the number of companies opting for this new way of exporting their cargo from here by sea increases, it will mean greater movement of complementary services to make this logistics work in the long term, generating greater economic activity in our area. This is very important for us because we are a regional company, and we want to see it strengthen and continue to grow,» he noted.
The executive highlighted the commitment of the private and public actors who made this first containerized salmon export from the southern region a reality. «Cermaq, through the freight forwarder Andes Logistics, Acme Chile, Integra Chile, Salmones Antártica, and Aquachile, were the first to invest in this new way of exporting by sea, boosting the southern region. We also thank Sernapesca and Customs for their willingness and good work, which, in their respective roles, has made this first shipment a reality,» he stated.
The first export shipment of salmon containers concluded on Sunday, January 24, at 11:00 p.m. The Cóndor motor vessel set sail at midnight for the Eighth Region.
